The statement charges for two chest X-rays at $190 each. Your after-visit summary shows one. If the hospital's review agrees, the balance is $1,050, not $1,240. Nothing has been sent yet: the letter and the itemized bill request wait for your OK.

  • Met: every line on the statement is checked against the after-visit summary
  • Met: the hospital's financial assistance policy is found
  • Met: the dispute letter states the disputed amount and the balance without it
  • Open: the hospital has answered the dispute in writingNo answer yet. The hospital reviews a dispute once it has the letter, and the letter waits for your OK.

Open: the hospital has answered the dispute in writing

What is known, and what is not
  • Known: the statement lists "Chest X-ray, 2 views" twice, at $190 each. The after-visit summary shows one chest X-ray, ordered and then read.
  • Not known: whether the hospital's own records show a second X-ray. Only the hospital can say, so the letter asks and does not accuse.
  • Billing would not discuss the account with the Caller. It explained the process: a dispute goes in writing, and the account is held for 30 days, with nothing sent to collections, once the dispute is logged. No hold is in place yet.
  • The statement is not an itemized bill. The itemized bill shows every charge with its code and the date and time it was entered, and only you can ask for it.
  • Stannard Park is a nonprofit, and its financial assistance policy and application are on its website under Billing. Applying is a separate step that needs details of your finances the team was not given.
  • Still open: the hospital's written answer.

Subject
Billing dispute: second chest X-ray charge, account •••2094

Dear Patient Financial Services, I am writing about the statement dated September 14 for my emergency department visit on Saturday, August 22 (account •••2094). I had no insurance for this visit, and the statement shows $1,240 due after your self-pay discount. The statement lists "Chest X-ray, 2 views" twice, at $190 each. My after-visit summary shows one chest X-ray, 2 views. Please review the second charge of $190. If one X-ray was taken, please remove the charge and send me a corrected statement showing a balance of $1,050. If your records show two, please send me the record of each, with the time it was taken. The other four lines are in my after-visit summary: emergency department visit, $480; one chest X-ray, $190; IV hydration, $220; comprehensive metabolic panel, $160. Your billing office says by phone that an account is held for 30 days, with nothing sent to collections, once a written dispute is logged. Please confirm in writing that this account is on hold, and the date the hold began. Sincerely, Jordan Whitaker

Caller
Hi, this is Yatir, an AI assistant calling for Jordan. Is it OK if I record this call?
Billing
You can record. Before you go on: without the patient on the line or a signed authorization on file, I can't open an account or talk about what's on it.
Caller
Understood. I won't ask about the account. How does a patient dispute a charge on a statement?
Billing
In writing, to Patient Financial Services, by email or by mail. Both addresses are printed on the statement. Put in the account number, the date of the visit and the charge in question.
Caller
What happens to the account while a dispute is reviewed?
Billing
Once the written dispute is logged, the account goes on hold for 30 days. Nothing is sent to collections during the hold.
Caller
Is the statement the same thing as an itemized bill?
Billing
No. The statement lists the services. The itemized bill lists every charge with its code and the date and time it was entered. The patient has to ask for it, by phone after an identity check, or in the patient portal.
Caller
Thank you. I can't agree to anything for Jordan. The letter and the request will come from Jordan.
